Katrina Cottage Plans
The Latest Addition
06 October 29
SILVER SPRING, MD - On Saturday, Oct. 28, the family of Katrina Cottage designs launched in the wake of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 added a new member. And for the first time, it's a Katrina Cottage prototype designed for a region beyond the Gulf Coast hurricane zone. Media sponsor USA WEEKEND magazine, the Congress for the New Urbanism, Montgomery County, Maryland, and housing manufacturer Housing International, Inc. were the partners that made possible the debut of this new mid-Atlantic design. Click here for a Slide Show of the journey of the cottage from Louisiana to Montgomery County and to the permanent site... images will be added over the next months as the cottage moves and the wings are added.
The USA WEEKEND Katrina Cottage is a 523-square-foot "Kernel Cottage" designed to grow to 1,303-square-feet with the addition of two wings. (Click here for an explanation of the Kernel Cottage concept). Designed by New Urban Guild founder Steve Mouzon, the cottage was produced in a South Louisiana factory by Housing International Inc. and trucked to Maryland for USA WEEKEND's celebration of Make a Difference Day.
Housing International is donating the cottage to a Montgomery County single mom, Phyllis Johnson, and her daughter, who qualified for the home through a county replacement housing program. (Check back here later for a Montgomery County press release on Ms. Johnson and the replacement housing program.)
This latest addition to the Katrina Cottage family follows a tradition begun at the Mississippi Renewal Forum in Biloxi in October of 2005 (click link for a history.) Also, click the next link to see Steve Mouzon's personal Recollections on the movement that led to his USA WEEKEND Katrina Cottage design.
Already, the Katrina Cottage movement has inspired several variations on the theme, including retail versions, live-works, and even a "learning cottage" alternative to temporary trailers for schools (click here for current Projects.)
Katrina Cottage advocates are hoping the Montgomery County, Maryland effort stimulates other governments around the country to consider ways in which these innovative designs can help planners achieve affordable living goals without sacrificing the architecture character of communities.
