Katrina Cottage Types
This website contains all seven basic types of Katrina Cottages: the Katrina Tiny Cottage, the Katrina Thin Cottage, the Katrina Double Cottage, the Katrina Kernel Cottage, the Katrina Courtyard Cottage, the Katrina Loft Cottage, and the Katrina Tall Cottage. It also includes two Katrina types that can include businesses: the Katrina Live/Work and the Katrina Commercial. Finally, it includes a general category

The Katrina Tiny Cottage
The Katrina Tiny Cottage measures 500 square feet or less and is one story tall. It is also less than 16' wide (measured to the eaves) so that it may be loaded onto a truck and hauled to another site if desired.

The Katrina Thin Cottage
The Katrina Thin Cottage meets the same width requirements as the Katrina Tiny Cottage, but it has more square footage. It is very similar to shotgun houses, but with one major exception. Shotguns used to line up rooms one behind the other, and if you wanted to get to the far room, you had to walk through the middle one, even if it was someone else's bedroom. The Katrina Thin Cottage makes major improvements here, because all Katrina Thin Cottages have private bedrooms. Some people question the usefulness of Katrina Tiny Cottages and Katrina Thin Cottages because of their size, yet it is precisely their size (and cost) that actually makes them more useful. What can you do with a 1,500 square foot house with three bedrooms and two baths? Live in it... and little else. But what can you do with a Katrina Tiny Cottage? It can be a Grandma's Cottage, a home office, a craft studio, a teen retreat, a music studio, and that's just in the back yard. Take it on the road, and it can be a field office, a hunting cabin, a mountaintop retreat, workers' housing, a fishing cabin, and dozens of other things like cabins at a bed & breakfast.

The Katrina Double Cottage
The Katrina Double Cottage is similar to the Katrina Thin Cottage, except it is up to twice as wide. All Katrina Double Cottages are designed to be divided into two parts if they ever need to be moved, although they are less likely to be moved than Katrina Tiny Cottages and Katrina Thin Cottages. Katrina Double Cottages generally have the most bedrooms and the greatest living space. They may be the beginning of a Kernel House, or may often stand alone.

The Katrina Kernel Cottage
The Katrina Kernel Cottage looks like either a Katrina Thin Cottage or a Katrina Tiny Cottage from the outside. The difference is in the layout of the floor plan. Most Tiny Cottage and Thin Cottage plans use as much of the exterior wall as possible for cabinets, bunk beds, bathrooms, etc. The Katrina Kernel Cottage is different. Because it is designed to grow into a Kernel House, it has at least three Grow Zones from which the house can be extended in one or two directions. Growth should be easy, and is usually accomplished by simply changing a window into a door.

The Katrina Courtyard Cottage
The Katrina Courtyard Cottage is made up of two or more wings that surround a courtyard on two, three, or four sides. Each of the wings is less than 16' wide. A Courtyard Cottage can be one or two stories. See Positive Outdoor Space for ideas of how to design the outdoor living space in the courtyard.

The Katrina Loft Cottage
The Katrina Loft Cottage has low eaves like any other one-story cottage, but it tucks a loft up under those eaves. Because the Loft Cottage is designed to be shippable like all of the other Katrina Cottages, it is also 16' wide or less, measured at the eaves. If shipped, it would ship in two parts and be assembled on-site with a crane.

The Katrina Tall Cottage
The Katrina Tall Cottage is a full two stories tall. Like the Loft Cottage, it is 16' wide or less, and if manufactured, ships in two parts that are assembled on-site with a crane.

The Katrina Live/Work
The Katrina Live/Work is a combination of a house and a shop. The shop occupies most or all of the first floor, while the house occupies the second floor and above. Because they can be moved, Katrina Live/Works are useful not only on Main Streets that are recovering from disasters, but also in new neighborhoods anywhere because new and recovering places often cannot afford to build full-blown masonry Main Street buildings. If built in a factory, the Katrina Live/Work ships in two or more pieces that are assembled on-site with a crane.

The Katrina Commercial
The Katrina Commercial unit is similar to the Katrina Live/Work, except that it contains only a shop. It is the least expensive Katrina unit type because it is a single wide-open space with only a kitchenette and ADA bathroom closed in at the back.
